i dislike 4chords, but her art isnt bad and i like some of her porn. i don’t know her personally, so i don’t really have an opinion of her in that way. i don’t really get why she’s as popular as she is, but i’m twice as confused by the vitriol that’s leveled at her.

basically the #1 thing in THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD that bothers me is when people predicate their opinions entirely on other people’s, or take positions they don’t actually hold because it’s something everyone else does (see: the billions of people who have incredibly strong opinions about twilight without ever having read the book) or they are afraid of being perceived negatively for disagreeing with popular concensus

and that’s basically what i see happening with avnp, people shitting on her because people in their particular social circle do it and look down on the people who do like her, or people projecting their irritation at her fans onto her which is another thing i think is dumb

also all the garbage with people “critiquing” her gets up my ass in a huge way. like, ok, there is a difference between constructive criticism, even harsh or blunt or outright mean criticism, and dressing up a personal attack as criticism so that you can make the other person look like the bad guy when they take offense

anyone who knows me from /ic/ or anywhere i did art criticism will know i am a fucking vehement critic. i have no problems with being really, really fucking mean, and i’ve written entire fucking essays about rudeness and hurting people’s feelings being legitimate tactics to inspire people to seriously reevaluate their work, so it’s not as if i’m some fucking candy ass who thinks sugarcoating is necessary

but i don’t do that for no reason

when i outright tell someone their art is bad, it is because i have identified the person as someone who is legitimately unaware that their artwork is bad, and needs to have some sort of emotional reaction induced so that they’ll be forced to dwell on everything i’ve said instead of dismissing it offhand. the rudeness is a tactic to draw attention to the actual substance of what i’ve written, and increase the likelihood of retention because they will take what i said to heart

if the person is not one of those people, the rudeness becomes rudeness for rudeness’s sake and utterly without any actual practical purpose

and from what i have seen avnp is not actually unaware that her art has flaws

every time i’ve seen her react “badly” to criticism is because the criticism was a patently apparent front to attack her from someone who already had a pretty obvious personal problem with her. i absolutely do not blame her for reacting badly to people attacking and harrassing her, which is what it was. calling something “critique” does not instantly absolve you of any ulterior motivation; the worst of the people involved in that mess really obviously did not give a shit about actually helping her improve her art. they wanted to attack her and make a spectacle of themselves, and were using a pretense of critique in order to paint her in a negative light for responding to what was the actual crux of their actions, i.e. the harrassment (which anyone who wasn’t already married to their negative opinion of her and being willfully ignorant could see). because if someone reacts negatively to artistic criticism they must be a terrible egotist with thin skin and an unhealthy personal attachment to their art right?!?!?!

yes that’s true when you are actually fucking critiquing someone and not dressing up your petty personal attacks to ensure that they have no real recourse for dealing with it

this just gets me especially bottomblistered because i actually give a shit about art critique can we not use it as a bludgeon for playground drama
